The Glamorous Life is the title track of Sheila E's debut album. Written by Prince, the song was "directed" by Sheila E. and The Starr Company. The song had been ear-marked for female vocal trio, Apollonia 6, an outfit assembled by Prince after the demise of Vanity 6, a female trio he put together in the early 80s, comprising of Brenda Bennett, Susan Moonsie and Denise Matthews. However, the plan to have Apollonia 6 record The Glamorous Life was abandoned after Prince found out that Apollonia Kotero, the lead singer of the group, had no intentions in remaining with the group once her contractual obligations tied to her role in the 1984 movie, Purple Rain, had been fulfilled. Prince instead offered the song to Sheila E. who had previously appeared with him on a non-album track he produced and released called Erotic City.

The Glamorous Life was released as a single in June 1984 and was a Top 10 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 7. The song removed Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us by Ollie & Jerry from the top spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in mid-August of '84, and for just one week, The Glamourous Life was at No. 1.

The song was nominated for Best R&B Song of the year at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony held on February 26, 1985 at Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, but lost out to another Prince composition, I Feel For You, a song sung by Chaka Khan,
