"This was a new song to me. In a rather serendipitous way, a Q-Tip fan was temping in a publishing house, and a guy was playing it in his office when she walked in. She said to him that he should send it to Paul Young, which he did.

"Ian [Kewley] wanted to write theme tunes for movies and TV shows and when we started doing this he said, 'You know what would sound good on this, my "hospital theme" - something he was playing with for a future hospital TV series! It went 'dah dah dah dah - dah dah', so he donated it for the sitar part of this track. I also really wanted to have a nylon-string guitar play the solo as well. These kind of things became important to that album. "When we did this track (I Was In Chains), I was influenced by Ry Cooder's acoustic period, in particular his soundtrack to The Long Rider, where he explored early American folk music - the kind of thing the cowboys might have been playing and listening to. I wanted to have those Celtic overtones on I Was In Chains and we explored the idea of getting The Chieftains in, but I couldn't believe how much they were quoting to do it! It was actually about me and my best friend Tony, who was in the Q-Tips, when we spent the summer of 1976 down in Cornwall. It was an absolute heatwave, and it was the best summer that a young kid could possibly have. "This (Tomb of Memories) was left over from the Q-Tips - I wrote it with Ian (Kewley). We got the Squeeze boys in [for backing vocals] because we did a lot of our recording down in South London in The Workhouse Studios, which was down the Old Kent Road, only a stone's throw from Deptford [where Squeeze were formed]. That line, 'The hurt don't stop' - I could just hear the two of them [Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook] doing it. "This was a new song to me. In a rather serendipitous way, a Q-Tip fan was temping in a publishing house, and a guy was playing it in his office when she walked in. She said to him that he should send it to Paul Young, which he did.

"Ian [Kewley] wanted to write theme tunes for movies and TV shows and when we started doing this he said, 'You know what would sound good on this, my "hospital theme" - something he was playing with for a future hospital TV series! It went 'dah dah dah dah - dah dah', so he donated it for the sitar part of this track. I also really wanted to have a nylon-string guitar play the solo as well. These kind of things became important to that album.
