Weekend, a song written by Leroy Burgess and James Calloway, was first recorded by the group, Phreek and released on Atlantic Records in 1978. Christine Wiltshire, who provides the vocals for the 1983 remake, was a member of Phreek and provided the lead vocals on the 1978 recording produced and arranged by Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess.

The 1983 version of Weekend was produced by Bob Blank and his wife, Lola, who in 1987 released a record on Jump Street called Wax The Van. Released on Sleeping Bag Records, an independent New York-based record label co-founded by Arthur Russell in 1981, Weekend was mixed by John Morales & Sergio Munizibai and Larry Levan, resident DJ at the legendary New York night club, Paradise Garage.

In 1988, DJ and record producer Todd Terry, under the moniker The Todd Terry Project, released his version of Weekend on Fresh Records, a subsidiary of Sleeping Bag Records, founded in 1985.
